You may have seen the new ads of ‘Red Mobile’ and made you excited of it’s offering of 50 cents per minute (P0.50/min) calls. It’s actually affiliated under Smart, the former ads-sponsored UMobile bought out from a 3G provider CURE (Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprise). You have to be in a 15-35 year old bracket in order to be invited then before you can get hold of their sim, mainly to ease their way of consumer goods advertisements in exchange of relatively low sponsored text messages and call rates.
But since the facelift to a Red Mobile and getting a national TV airtime, it may seem to hit its commercial sale soon. It’s clearly gearing towards combating the unlimited Sun-to-Sun calls. Though, Sun Cellular may be on their way to getting better, fluid network connection on the second quarter of next year, it can be a ‘smart’ move to cut the unlimited calls pie before the end of the year.
Another interesting thought is Smart getting hold of a greater 3G bandwidth than Globe and Sun through their CURE’s acquisition. With Globe getting more popularity with their 3G network through their exclusive iPhone 3G launching, Smart may try to outrun Globe on this field yet again with their Red Mobile offering.
As of now 3G is yet to pick up in the country. Not to mention places with its signal are limited to urban areas and some provincial commercial hubs. Will Smart have its red knight get a fork play on Sun’s unlimited calls and Globe’s 3G popularity?

2No one’s interested, aeronaut7, so shut up.
Anyway, Smart is trying to outfox its two greatest rivals by trying to dominate the 3G bandwidth allocation scene. When they bought CURE, they didn’t care about the rest–all they’re after is CURE’s 3G allocation. And, from the looks of things, Red Mobile was just an afterthought.
Kaya, applause for SMART. They did a pretty slick move.
But, still, SMART is ways far from beating Sun Cellular (after the latter pulled the rug from under them and Globe when it launched) in the unlimited business, so gaining CURE’s 3G allocation is a plus. However, don’t expect that dynamite you call Sun Cellular to sit down pretty–in fact, they could be preparing to pull the rug from under SMART and Globe, yet again.
